Why does one word not always equal one token?

Are long words always split into more tokens than short words?

The answer

Not always. A long but common vocabulary item may be one token, while a short unusual string can require several pieces under the same tokenizer.

More FAQs in Why does one word not always equal one token?

Yes. Emoji can contain multiple Unicode code points or byte sequences, and tokenizers may divide them into several units rather than one visible symbol.

Removing spaces can damage meaning or code and may not reduce the count predictably. Measure the result with the matching tokenizer before making formatting changes.
