How to Implement A/B Testing on the Frontend

How to build bucket division systems to bucket users, toggle variant components, and track conversion events.

  1. Generate or Retrieve Client ID Keys

Retrieve a persistent tracking cookie or UUID key for the user, or create a new unique identifier string if none exists in client storage.

  2. Create a Deterministic Hashing Utility

Write a simple hashing function that converts the user's string ID into a consistent integer value score.

  3. Assign Users to Test Buckets

Run a modulo mathematical operation on the user's hash score (e.g., 'hash % 100') to get a percentage bucket rating from 0 to 99.

  4. Define Experiment Variance Slots

Establish variation bounds: assign users with a bucket score under 50 to variant group 'A' (control) and scores 50 and above to variant group 'B' (treatment).

  5. Cache Assigned Group Selections

Save the resolved variation group assignment string inside 'localStorage' or client cookie tables to ensure the user sees the same variant across future sessions.

  6. Render Component Variants Conditionally

Use conditional logic within your main component code to display either variant component layout based on the active assignment string.

  7. Dispatch Experiment Exposure Metrics

Fire a telemetry event to your tracking analytics server (e.g., 'track("Experiment Exposed", { variant: "B" })') as soon as the component mounts on the screen.

  8. Bind Conversion Event Listeners

Attach analytics event trackers to conversion interaction goals (such as checkout buttons or sign-up forms) to measure the performance of each variant.
