How to Build a Virtualized List from Scratch

How to render ultra-high-volume datasets efficiently by displaying only visible elements within the active viewport.

  1. Set Up the Container Viewport

Construct a primary scrollable container div with an explicit height property and set its CSS overflow rules to 'overflow-y: auto'.

  2. Calculate Total Runway Height

Create an inner structural div inside the container whose total height equals the number of items in the dataset multiplied by the fixed height of a single row.

  3. Track Active Scroll Position

Attach an 'onScroll' event listener to the container component to capture the current vertical scroll location ('scrollTop') via a reactive state variable.

  4. Compute the Starting Element Index

Divide the current 'scrollTop' position value by the fixed item height. Run 'Math.floor()' on the result to find the index of the first visible row.

  5. Compute the Ending Element Index

Add the visible viewport height to the 'scrollTop' value, divide by the item height, and run 'Math.ceil()' to find the index of the last visible row.

  6. Incorporate Render Buffer Padding

Subtract 2 from the start index and add 2 to the end index to create a buffer zone. This renders a few off-screen elements to prevent visual flickering during fast scrolling.

  7. Slice the Active Dataset Buffer

Extract the subset of data items to display by calling '.slice(startIndex, endIndex)' on your massive source data collection array.

  8. Position Elements with a CSS Transform

Map over the sliced data subset. Apply an inline style with a CSS transform ('translateY') equal to 'index * itemHeight' to position each row correctly inside the large runway element.
